How to find market-moving stock catalysts

A potential stock catalyst is fresh, specific and material information that can change expectations. Find the primary source, compare it with what was already known and identify the risks before judging the move.

Educational only: this guide is not investment advice or a recommendation to trade.

What can act as a catalyst?

Examples include earnings surprises, guidance changes, clinical data, regulatory decisions, contracts, financing, acquisitions, leadership changes, restructurings and legal outcomes. A headline is not automatically a catalyst: it must add information the market may consider meaningful.

Use a five-question filter

  1. Is it new? Recycled coverage may have little informational value.
  2. Is it specific? Look for dates, amounts, counterparties and defined milestones.
  3. Is it material? Compare the event with the company’s scale and expectations.
  4. Is the source credible? Prefer SEC filings, company releases and direct records.
  5. What could negate it? Check financing needs, dilution, conditions and execution risk.

Separate attention from outcome

News can attract trading attention without improving long-term value. Conversely, a fundamental change may take time to be recognized. Keep “could move today” separate from “changes the investment case.”

Research it with CatalystIQ

Enter a ticker or open a name from Discover. CatalystIQ reviews recent news and SEC filings, then presents a catalyst score, attention, theme strength, risk, sentiment, catalyst type and red flags with source context. Use the report to prioritize deeper research, not as a buy or sell signal.

Write the invalidation case

Before considering action, state what would make the thesis wrong: old news, vague economics, a pending condition, dilution, low liquidity or conflicting disclosure. If you cannot state the risk, the catalyst is not yet understood.
